The best photography locations in the Lake District (With Parking & Easy Access)

The best photography locations in the Lake District don't require long hikes.

The Lake District is one of the most photographed landscapes in the UK. But finding the right photography and parking locations at the right time can be the difference between coming home with average images or something truly special.

As a landscape photographer and author of photography location guides, I've spent countless hours exploring the Lake District, often learning the hard way through trial and error. From missed light to inaccessible viewpoints, I've experienced the same frustrations many photographers face when visiting for the first time.

This easy-access Lake District location guide is designed to solve that.

Whether you're a beginner, a professional, short on time, or simply looking for easy-access photography locations without long hikes, this article will show you exactly here to go and how to make the most of each location.

I’ve been visiting the Lake District for over 12 years, and for the past six years I’ve focused heavily on landscape photography here. Having visited every location personally, in 2025 I released my Photographing The Lake District Guide which has since become part of a collection trusted by over 1,500 photographers with an average 5-star review

Unlike many Lake District photography guides that focus on long mountain hikes, my approach is different. Every location in my guides has been field-tested for accessibility, meaning photographers can reach them via roadside access or short walks of around 30 minutes or less.

This philosophy is simple: Spend less time planning and more time shooting. Below are four of the best photography locations in the Lake District has to offer - they each offer unique conditions, compositions and photographic potential.

What are the Best Photography Locations in the Lake District?

The Lake District offers an incredible variety of landscapes in a relatively small area. Dramatic mountains, reflective lakes, winding roads and ever changing weather conditions.

It's that unpredictability that makes every visit so rewarding.

However, it also makes planning absolutely essential. Turning up at the wrong time, or in the wrong conditions, can mean missing the shot entirely.

Why the Lake District is one of the Best for Landscape Photography

The best photography locations in the Lake District offer stunning landscapes, combined with easy-access and parking, include Buttermere, Wast Water and Ullswater.

Roadside and short walk locations, no hiking required - allow for multi-location photogprahy trips that allow you to maximise your time in the Lake District

Iconic spots for capturing dramatic light and reflections include Castlerigg Stone Circle, the panoramic views from Friar's Crag on Derwentwater and Kelly Hall Tarn.

Wast Water - Easy Access Photography Location in the Lake District

1. Wast Water is one of the most atmospheric locations in the Lake District and in my experience one of the most reliable.

What Wast Water makes it so special is its versatility, it works in nearly all conditions, stormy skies, calm reflections, mist rolling through the valley. It consistently delivers strong images and is the perfect Lake District roadside photography location!

Wast Water Photography Tips:

  • Wast Water can be a highly versatile location depending on the weather conditions.
  • Best for mood, drama and changing conditions. However some times patience is required, you don't need to wait for the perfect weather conditions.
  • Patience: But sometimes waiting for the weather to pass will reveal amazing light, or the tops of the mountains and sometimes fleeting reflections.

Pros:

  • Accessibility: Wast Water is the definition of a park and shoot location, with the shore a very short walk from the parking area.
  • Parking: There is ample parking for all vehicles types and sizes.
  • Versatility: No matter the weather conditions there will always be a shot available here!

Cons:

  • Popularity: Despite being located the furthest west from the major routes it can get busy - avoid bank and school holidays.
  • Time: Its a long way to travel, study those weather apps and avoid low level overcast days!
  • Approach Road: The road to Wast Water is narrow in places and larger vehicles may struggle.

Blea Tarn - Lake District Landscape Photography without hiking

2. Blea Tarn is among the best photography locations in the Lake District.

Blea Tarn is a photographers dream, an easy-access Lake District photography location, providing amazing images, especially when conditions align for reflections.

Surrounded by the Langdale Pikes, it offers a clean, classic composition with minimal effort required to access it.

Photography Tips: Blea Tarn, Langdale

  • Foreground Interest: Use the rocks at the edge of the water to add depth to your, shots. There are plenty to chose from just be mindful it can get really boggy around the tarn.
  • Theres more to Blea Tarn than the 'classic tarn shots'. As the path winds around the tarn, take the path to the left just after the stream and wooden bridge and go and explore!

Pros:

  • Accessibility: The classic shots of Blea Tarn and the Langdales is a mere 5 minute walk from the car park.
  • Parking: There is ample parking for all vehicles types and sizes but larger vehicles may struggle to navigate the tight approach roads.
  • Amazing Scenery: The spectacular combination Blea Tarn and The Langdale Pikes is regarded as being one of the best in the Lake District.

Cons:

  • Boggy Ground: There is a clear path which can be used to walk around Blea Tarn, however if you descend to the waters edge, which you'll need to to photograph the partially submerged rocks then it will get boggy. I did on one occasion sink to my knee and nearly lost a walking boot!
  • No Overnight Stays: This area is governed by the National Trust with clear signs stipulating no fires and no camping. Be respectful and leave no trace.

Buttermere - Easy Access Photography Locations Lake District

3. Buttermere is the best easy-access Lake District photography locations, a favourite for landscape photographers and for good reason.

Buttermere combines stunning light, atmospheric conditions and the added benefit of a scenic circular walk that provides multiple compositions in one visit.

However, if you know where the best compositions are you don't need to complete the full walk and can maximise your time in this amazing part of the Lake District.

Buttermere Photography Tips:

  • Autumn: Considered the best time for vibrant colors.
  • Early Morning/Late Afternoon: Provides the best "low" lighting for highlighting texture.
  • Calm Days: Crucial for capturing mirror-like reflections of the mountains.
  • Cloudy/Rainy Weather: Adds a moody atmosphere to the scenery

Duke of Portland Boathouse: Lake District Roadside Photography Location

4. The Duke of Portland Boathouse is one of the most iconic photography locations in the Lake District with parking.

Located close to Pooley Bridge, the boathouse is not just iconic, its also one of the most accessible locations in the Lake District. Its an ideal location for photographer's who want a strong lakeland scene without the long hike.

The Ullswater Boathouse is one of the best easy-access landscape photography locations in the Lake District. Close to the M6 at Penrith, great close-by parking, a very short walk roadside location.

Photography Tips - Ullswater Boathouse.

  • Best Time & Light: Sunrise will illuminate the front of the boathouse. Winter mornings will often offer the best light and moody mist.
  • Composition: Get low to the water's edge to include foreground interest, such as reeds, rocks, or reflections. A wide-angle lens, e.g. 16-35mm will help to capture the landscape.
The Duke of Portland Boathouse is another of the best photography locations in the Lake District for accessibility

Pros:

  • Accessibility: The boathouse is just a few minutes walk from the lay-by.
  • Best for Sunrise: The boathouse faces in an easterly direction, sunrises will provide the best light between August and March.
  • Amazing Reflections: Whilst you can flatten the water with longer exposures, you can obtain amazing reflections here. You'll need wind speeds less than 3 mph.

Cons:

  • Parking: Parking is limited to a lay-by which is large enough for a few vehicles. Although I've never failed to park.
  • Path: There is no path along the road, so care is needed to cross the road and descend to the lake shore.
  • Respect Privacy: Remember that this is a private holiday rental, so photograph respectfully from public areas.

Common Mistakes Photographers Make in the Lake District

One of the biggest mistakes I see photographers make when visiting the Lake District is poor planning around weather.

The Lake District's conditions change rapidly and forecasts aren't always reliable. Travelling long distances without a clear plan often leads to wasted time and missed opportunities.

Other common mistakes include:

  • Not knowing exactly where to go.
  • Wasting time searching for compositions.
  • Arriving at the wrong time of day.
  • Underestimating access and struggling to find parking.

The reality is simple: The more prepared you are, the better your results will be.

Many of the best photography locations in the Lake District are missed simply because photographers don’t know they exist. That’s exactly why I created the Photographing The Lake District Guide.

I've personally visited and photographed every location - The guide includes:

  • Carefully researched accessible photography locations
  • Clear and accurate parking information.
  • Detailed directions and access information
  • Sunrise and sunset advice
  • Practical photography tips for each location
  • Most importantly, every location is accessible via roadside parking or short walks, making them perfect for photographers who want incredible images without committing to long hikes.

Case Study - Planning the Perfect Shot at Ullswater

I once planned a shoot at Ullswater with a very specific goal - to capture an image of the Duke of Portland Boathouse as a gift for my brothers in laws 70th birthday.

The challenge? Unpredictable weather!

I spent weeks carefully watching challenging forecasts, waiting for a window where the conditions aligned. When that opportunity appeared, I committed to a 4 hour round trip for a single image.

It paid off!The conditions were perfect, allowing me to capture an image that was later printed, framed and genuinely cherished.

The LessonGreat images in the Lake District aren't accidental-they're planned.

The Best Locations for Photographers Short on Time (No Hiking Required)

Not everyone wants-or is able-to hike long distances in the Lake District for a photo.

Thats why I focus heavily on roadside and short walks.

Locations Like:

  • Wast Water

  • Blea Tarn

  • Ullswater

  • Buttermere

Offer incredible results without the need for long, difficult hikes. This makes them ideal for ...

  • Photographers with limited time
  • Those with mobility considerations
  • Anyone looking to maximise shooting opportunities in a single day.

Why Most Photography Guides Fall Short (And What Actually Helps)

Most free blogs and even some guidebooks focus on inspiration but lack practical detail.

They often don't tell you:

  • Where to park

  • How to access the exact viewpoint

  • The quickest route

  • What to expect when you get there

Thats where a structured, field-tested approach makes all the difference. Every location I include in my guides has been:

  • Personally visited
  • Tested for accessibility
  • Verified parking
  • Refined through real-world experience

I also include precise navigation using what3words so you can go straight to the exact spot without wasting time so you can spend less time planning and more time shooting!

Final Thoughts: Making the Most of Your Lake District Photography Trip

The Lake District offers some of the best landscape photography opportunities in the UK. But success comes down to preparation

If you:

  • Plan around the weather
  • Chose the right locations
  • Focus on accessibility and efficiency

You'll dramatically improve your chances of capturing something special.

Yes, many of the best photography locations in the Lake District are easily accessible from roadside viewpoints or short walks, making them ideal for photographers short on time or with limited mobility.

Whats the most photographed location in the Lake District?

Due to its amazing mountainous scenery the Lake District is incredibly popular with landscape photographers. There are lots of locations which could be described as 'honey pot' which some may described as over photographed. When is the best time to visit the Lake District?

I find due to the vibrancy and available colour palette Autumn is a favourite. But every season will offer something unique and different.

  • Spring: Wildflowers, especially bluebells come to life and change the characteristics of the scene.
  • Summer: Golden sunshine, long days with beautiful pure colour from the heather.
  • Autumn: Stunning vibrant colours as the trees change colour with a mix of yellow and orange transform the scenery.
  • Winter: Whilst the days become shorter the sunsets can often be stronger than the summer months, combined with blue skies during the day contrasted against the snow capped peaks offer something completely different to the rest of the year.
